BACKGROUND: Coran's wiki page and a general series page!
PERSONALITY:
In essence, Coran comes across as an exuberant and goofy comic relief character: the wacky uncle with a moustache, darting to and fro, a relatively nonsensical Altean saying primed and ready at all times. And to an extent, this is all accurate. Coran is a high-energy, high-enthusiasm person. He attends to his duties and tasks with vigor and determination, nearly always happy to rope a nearby paladin into it to help, or to engage someone in a friendly conversation. He is a chipper force of nature, a team member who is very rarely seen to be quiet or subdued on any occasion, and he seems more than content to keep it that way.
But behind that admittedly... accurate picture, Coran still holds a lot of depth. The implication of his own words is that he's at least six hundred years old (old enough to have seen his grandfather build the Castle of Lions), and that he's gained a lot of knowledge/experience in the time he's been alive. He's intelligent, too, and is often the one tending to castle repairs while they're traveling. He seems to know the ship and its parts inside-out, and is typically the one suggesting where they may need to head to find replacement parts when something breaks beyond repair. He's also Allura's royal advisor, a role that doesn't just fall into the hands of any nearby civilian. The traditional "wise elder" role isn't one that suits him: he has his own brand of wisdom, one that is not always terribly understandable. If there's a technology for something specific in the castle, chances are Coran's done enough dabbling in it in the past to be proficient with it.
Like Allura, he's lost his entire planet and culture seemingly overnight, and it's unclear whether he had more time to prepare for that possibility before being placed into a cryo pod than Allura was given. He was instructed to protect, advise, and watch over the Princess, and it's a duty that Coran takes very seriously for all his goofy behavior. Coran's most serious moments are often directly related to Allura being in danger or distress of any kind. When she allows herself to be captured by the Galra to save Shiro's life, Coran is incredibly upset to get the news-- so much so that he loses his temper and blames Shiro, despite logically knowing that it wasn't Shiro's fault. Allura means the world to him; and considering he's lost one world already, he's not eager to lose that much more.
He carries a deep regard for the traditions he grew up with and for the knowledge he had of the universe before being put in stasis. When the crew needs to deal with a new planet, species, or custom, Coran is often quick on the scene to offer his version of exposition. His knowledge is occasionally outdated or not quite as relevant as he might like, and some of his gestures are not particularly well-received, which he can be sensitive about. He's a bit sensitive overall, actually. When the "traditional paladin lunch" he prepares is rebuffed at large for Hunk's clearly superior fare, he just tells Allura that he doesn't want to talk about how the paladin lunch went. Implying that he's old leads to a stream of very insistent declarations that he most certainly is not old, thank you. It's not often that he lets a failed attempt to impart his knowledge get him down, though, and he determinedly tries to put his experience to the best possible use.
Coran is also compassionate and empathizes with the plights of others. When he and Hunk hear about the way the Galran empire has taken from the Balmera (a large, dormant creature that essentially produces energy crystals), he's visibly saddened. In fact, when it's time for them to acquire the crystal that they need, he refuses to do any less than his best to remove it without harming the creature in spite of the tight timeline they're on. After so many years of the Galra taking without giving back, he can't allow himself to do the same. Coran's a bit of a caretaker at heart: from the castle to the Princess to the paladins, he always seems to be doing his best to provide comfort or support in times of need. Anytime he notices someone being unusually subdued or distant, he'll approach to check up on them without a second thought (something he's done for both Shiro and Lance, putting aside the more obvious example of Allura). Coran encourages teamwork and communication between the team while he's overseeing their training, and does his best to be a strong support for the Princess at all times.
Anyone can admit that it takes a lot of fortitude to wake up after ten thousand years, find out that your entire species has apparently been exterminated, and still do your best to bounce back and watch out for the people around you during dangerous situations.
Coran is a kindhearted and loyal person at heart. Not above hurt feelings, not above pettiness or snapping at someone, and incredibly long-winded at times, but nonetheless a very brave and dedicated individual.
ABILITIES/POWERS: So far in the series, Coran hasn't been shown to possess any particular supernatural powers, though it's presumed that Alteans are stronger than the average human. Allura states in canon that their species has the ability to shapeshift a little, but it hasn't been confirmed if this applies to Coran. He's relatively agile for his age and shown to have quick reflexes, especially when it comes to watching out for Allura; with his military background it's safe to assume he is or once was proficient in a combat situation. He provides the vast majority of his contributions out of the field, though, so to speak. Whether it's keeping the Castle of Lions in good shape, performing his duties as Allura's advisor, cooking, overseeing training, occasionally taking the helm, taking charge on expeditions for parts to contribute to castle upkeep, presumably cleaning-- well, Coran has his way of getting around to his duties.
Coran falls a bit into the old "jack of all trades, master of none" saying in that regard. He's not the most strong or intelligent person on the team, or even the best cook (not hard to beat honestly) but he can apply himself to a very broad spectrum of duties. What he has on his side that the others generally don't is a vast wealth of experience. Coran's got centuries of training, traveling and living on his side, though his knowledge can often be outdated after ten thousand years in a cryo pod. Coran is intelligent and experienced, but also a bit scatterbrained. The official stat sheet the show's site provides for him states that "he maintains a treasure trove of knowledge in his brain, but like a storage unit that's been flooded and pushed off a cliff, it takes a little while to find the pertinent information." This is highly accurate.

WRITTEN SAMPLE:
Under any other circumstances, Coran thinks he could've spared some some curiosity and intrigue for the orientation ceremony. It's so well-organized, after all, so well-prepared with not only information on this fleet, but a bit of the science behind his being pulled here. But instead, it almost feels like he's barely had time to get his feet beneath him before the group is let out into the open air, packets in hand. His heart is still pounding from the arrival, not to mention what was happening before... before this. He tries to ask after Allura and the paladins at every turn, dodges his way through crowds craning his neck and hoping beyond hope that they'll all just appear there next to him, completely unharmed. None of them appear.
"How did I lose five lions and a castle?!" The frantic outburst earns Coran more than a few concerned looks from fellow passengers- crew members? is he part of this crew now?- likely not helped by the way that he's pulled on his hair until it sticks out all around the edges. They could be anywhere, and he has no way to track any of them from here! It's maddening. It's an insult to the heart of temporal possibility. It's. Well, it's pretty much just inconvenient at every turn, for lack of a better way to put it. Helping a ragtag team of adolescents defeat the greatest threat the universe has ever seen gets a bit difficult when there's no longer a team, ragtag or not, actively in his presence working against the Galra empire.
All he knows for certain is that he's here and someone's taken the liberty of assigning him work. Coran follows the directions on the informational papers without giving it very much thought, almost overwhelmed by the sheer lack of anything else he can do at the moment. Part of him bristles at being assigned to anything: he's already quite gainfully employed, in his humble opinion, and by all rights he should currently be on a castle ship careening through an out-of-control wormhole, checking the rift exit positioning monitor to find out just where that wormhole is taking them. Another part of him is doing its best to reboot after a long and trying series of new circumstances. It's like they always say, flexibility is the key to survival. With some time to adjust, he's sure he'll be back to top form, ready to have at the more immediate challenges in his way until he can puzzle out returning to the Castle of Lions somehow.
Under any other circumstances, he might be thrilled to observe and get to know the new species and individual personalities of the many people hitched up to this vessel.
Current circumstances considered, of course, it's all he can do not to sit on the floor and wonder if Allura must be feeling as alone as he does at the moment.
